What is In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) ?

In Vitro Fertilisation is a surgical procedure used to treat infertility. This involves a set of processes in which a woman’s ovulatory process is been monitored and stimulated when an ovum from the woman’s ovary is removed and made to fertilise with the sperm in a solution placed in a laboratory. That very fertilised egg then undergoes embryo culture for at least 2-6 days. This egg is then transferred to the concerned woman’s uterus. It intended to make a successful attempt to get pregnant eventually. IVF, mainly and primarily aims at improving the pregnancy rates for the woman who cannot conceive. A ray of hope for all those infertile women who are indeed lacking motherhood, In Vitro Fertilisation is acting as a harbinger in the lives of all the childless couples in accordance with their health issues.

A Brief History

It was in 1978, when the first ever IVF born child came into existence. Louise Brown was born as result of natural cycle IVF treatment, where no stimulation was done. In the year 2012, an estimated number of approximately five million children worldwide had been born with the help of In Vitro Fertilisation treatment as well as other reproduction techniques.

Medical implementations

IVF have been used to treat infertility in females since the time of its inception or invention. The problems with fallopian tubes are treated with IVF technique. The best part with In Vitro Fertilisation is that it can be used to treat male infertility as well. It depends on the sperm quality of the male partner, which is intended to be diagnosed. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is one such treatment used for those males who lack fertility.
